That way, farmers have nothing to lose in promoting clean water throughout the state. On his approximately 5,000 acres, Diener grows an array of row crops using innovative approaches to land, water and wildlife management. Among other achievements, Diener pioneered work on conservation tillage for his crops that reduces the number of tractor passes, dust and diesel emissions, and fuel costs. He is now coupling conservation tillage with water-efficient irrigation systems - initiatives Sustainable Conservation is leading throughout the state.

With our agricultural partners, Sustainable Conservation produced an educational video demonstrating a promising new technology called "draghose injection." The technology helps farmers balance their use of potentially harmful commercial fertilizers, better manage dairy waste, save money and, ultimately, boost the health of California's vital water resources.

Why is this advancement so important? According to experts, nearly 600 square miles of groundwater alone in the Central Valley is contaminated with high levels of harmful nitrates, much of which comes from fertilizer runoff from farms. Dairies are a particular concern, as the state's nearly 2 million dairy cows produce 65 billion pounds of waste each year. That's as much as the state's entire 37 million human population.

Draghose injection helps farmers better manage manure, preventing the pollution of water sources millions of Californians and countless species of plants and animals depend on.

"The first 'cow-powered' truck made its debut at the 2009 World Ag Expo. Two trucks that normally run on diesel have been converted to run on biomethane produced from cow manure at Hilarides Dairy, Lindsay. This renewable fuels model reduces global warming emissions (methane from manure), air pollution (from diesel emissions) and dependence on fossil fuels without a food-fuel trade-off in land use."

KPBS Radio reports on Sustainable Conservation-led legislation that reduces the amount of copper used in brakes to an insignificant amount in a phased manner. The bill, SB 346 (Kehoe), places a 5%-by-weight limit on the amount of copper used in brakes sold in California by 2021, and reduces that percentage to a minimal 0.5% by 2032. The brakes developed to meet these requirements will also meet all applicable safety and performance standards.

I occasionally receive press releases about new text books that touch on the topic in a chapter or two but a book dedicated specifically to green lodging? I have not seen any - until now."

With Sustainable Conservation's help, pioneering dairy farmer Rob Hilarides (pronounced "hill-r-des") developed the nation's first "cow powered" semi-truck. Hilarides converted two commercial milk trucks that normally use diesel to run on biogas produced from cow manure on his Central Valley dairy. Doing so reduces his global warming emissions, air pollution (from diesel emissions) and dependence on fossil fuels. Biogas is the world's only carbon-negative vehicle fuel. Using it nationally would be like taking 16 million cars off the road.

Video runtime: 4:16
