While we've championed its clean air and economic benefits for years, the innovative cultivation practice, conservation tillage, is making headlines.

Conservation tillage involves leaving crop stubble (such as corn stalks) on the surface of the soil and planting a new crop right on top.

To date, Sustainable Conservation expanded the number of reduced-till acres in California to more than 80,000 with the help of our industry, academic and government partners. Statewide, reduced till could cut dust pollution from agricultural sources by more than 50%.

Besides reducing greenhouse gases, reduced till cuts harmful air pollution and builds healthy communities (especially in the Central Valley) hard hit by dirty air - some of the worst in the nation. Reduced till also lowers fuel, labor and maintenance costs for farmers without reducing their yields.

"California is the nation's largest dairy state, which means that while cows there produce a lot of milk, they also produce something else - methane gas.

And methane is a powerful contributor to climate change.

Some farmers, at a great up-front cost, are capturing the gas and using it to create renewable electricity for their farms. But by solving one environmental problem, they're running headlong into another."

Legislators have given a red light to vehicle brake pads containing copper, a chemical harmful to salmon and other aquatic life.

After a 15-year fight that surfaced with concerns about the San Francisco Bay, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed SB346, which requires brake pad manufacturers to reduce the use of copper to no more than 5 percent by 2021 and no more than 0.5 percent by 2025.

It's a major feat considering the stakeholders - environmental groups, carmakers, brake manufacturers and government officials, said Ashley Boren, the executive director of Sustainable Conservation. "It was much better for the diverse interests to work together to find a solution instead of potentially have this go into litigation," she said.

Through Sustainable Conservation's Dairy Water Quality Grant Program - which you can read about in our latest newsletter (http://suscon.org/news/newsletters/Fall 2010 Newsletter_Final.pdf) - growing number of Central Valley dairy farmers have implemented novel methods for managing manure that ensure tasty milk is synonymous with clean water.

With our help, dairy farmers are keeping almost 400 million pounds of cow manure a year out of waterways - nearly double the waste produced by San Francisco's human population. They're using this valuable manure to fertilize the crops they feed their cows - rather than using petroleum-based fertilizer. And, by using reclaimed liquid manure to irrigate crops, our farming partners conserve nearly 9 million gallons of limited fresh water each year.

Our work also saves farmers thousands of dollars in fertilizer and feed costs annually, and helps them meet clean water standards.

The biggest barrier to setting up methane digesters (http://suscon.org/cowpower/index.php) in the San Joaquin Valley is the strict emission requirement to remove 98-99% of NOx emissions – which come from the electricity generator – yet current technology can remove about 94-5%. Sustainable Conservation has received a grant from the USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) for the development of technology to remove the remaining 4-5% of the NOx emissions and therefore make permitting much easier.

Capital Press Agriculture Weekly just published an article (http://www.capitalpress.com/content/ws-digesters-081310) about dairy farmers like Larry Castelanelli in Lodi, California -- who installed a digester to convert his 1600 cows' manure into electricity. There's hope for more dairy farmers to get digesters up and running so they can sell excess electricity to their local utility company and sell carbon credits for trapping methane emissions. A committee of dairy producers, environmentalists and San Joaquin Valley air and water boards is working on a standardized permitting process that would be faster and less costly - perhaps by December.

Highlights of Sustainable Conservation's noteworthy achievements in 2009 are now available: http://suscon.org/news/newsletters/ar_2009.pdf.

As you'll read, 2009 was a tough year for fish in California. The lowest number of adult salmon in the state's history returned to spawn in the Bay-Delta. For the second time in a row, California's commercial salmon season was canceled outright – another sobering first for the state.

But, with the help of Sustainable Conservation's popular Partners in Restoration program – which makes it faster, easier and cheaper for committed landowners to improve water quality and wildlife habitat on their properties – fish populations are getting a boost.

Through our program, landowners in Marin and Santa Cruz counties implemented a constellation of restoration projects across a variety of critical watersheds. Together, the projects restored and/or opened up nearly 30 miles of streams previously unreachable for fish. They also reduced sediment in area waterways by more than 30,000 tons and re-established extensive areas of streamside vegetation – important for creating healthy fish habitat.

Statewide, Partners in Restoration now simplifies restoration on millions of acres, and along hundreds of miles of rivers and streams in 50 key watersheds. With the tremendous support of our supporters, we're helping the state's struggling fish make their way home again.

Full article: http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/2010/jun/13/crackdown-copper-which-perils-wildlife-and-water/. San Diego's Chollas Creek is one of the most polluted waterways in the region, and about 50% of the copper in it comes from brake dust.

The article quoted Sustainable Conservation's Policy Director Stacey Sullivan: "It has been proven time and again that the least expensive way to keep copper out of waterways like Chollas Creek is to stop contamination at the source." Copper interferes with salmon's ability to navigate and avoid predators using their sense of smell.

Sustainable Conservation has worked on this issue for 11 years, putting together a diverse group of stakeholders (brake pad manufacturers, environmental organizations and municipalities) to reach consensus on the science and the solutions. That work led the Brake Pad Partnership to support state legislation to phase out copper in brake pads (SB 346), which has passed the state Senate and is now moving through the Assembly. All the stakeholders agree that copper in brake pads must be reduced to protect clean water in San Francisco Bay and other important waterways.

In its April 25th issue (http://www.modbee.com/2010/04/25/1141506/use-of-low-dust-farm-practices.html), the Modesto Bee highlights a recent Sustainable Conservation survey which found that between 2004 and 2008 Central Valley farmers switched to "reduced tillage" practices on nearly 20% of land used to grow row crops like corn and wheat silage.

These tillage practices (http://suscon.org/conservationtillage/index.php), which Sustainable Conservation has promoted for years, cut the number of tractor passes needed to prepare fields for planting, which means lower fuel and labor costs for farmers, and less dust and diesel pollution in the air. The technology helps farmers balance their use of potentially harmful commercial fertilizers, better manage dairy waste, save money and, ultimately, boost the health of California's vital water resources.

Why is this advancement so important? According to experts, nearly 600 square miles of groundwater alone in the Central Valley is contaminated with high levels of harmful nitrates, much of which comes from fertilizer runoff from farms. Dairies are a particular concern, as the state's nearly 2 million dairy cows produce 65 billion pounds of waste each year. That's as much as the state's entire 37 million human population.

Draghose injection helps farmers better manage manure, preventing the pollution of water sources millions of Californians and countless species of plants and animals depend on.

The brakes developed to meet these requirements will also meet all applicable safety and performance standards.

With Sustainable Conservation's help, pioneering dairy farmer Rob Hilarides (pronounced "hill-r-des") developed the nation's first "cow powered" semi-truck. Doing so reduces his global warming emissions, air pollution (from diesel emissions) and dependence on fossil fuels. Biogas is the world's only carbon-negative vehicle fuel. Using it nationally would be like taking 16 million cars off the road.

Video runtime: 4:16
